ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A local college wants to connect more people to New Mexico’s digital workforce. They’re hoping to help get teens, especially in underserved communities, jobs in the field of coding.

Organizers with Central New Mexico Community College’s Deep Dive Coding and nonprofit organization, Cultivating Coders, are partnering up to provide a pathway for young people pursuing a career in coding.

“A lot of the high school kids don’t know what they want to do next. With the exposure that they get with Cultivating Coders, they want to get deeper into that coding. Some will want to get a formal education, so they can come through our program and get college credits,” said Kyle Lee, Chief Executive Officer, CNM Ingenuity.

Cultivating Coders brings opportunities to communities that may be less likely to have access to it, such as inner-city neighborhoods, Native American reservations and or rural communities.

Teens will get hands-on learning through their coding boot camp. However, after that is over, students may not know what to do next.

Which is where the new partnership comes in.

The two organizations will be working with each other to show young people the options they have when it comes to coding opportunities.

‘When they go through this entire pathway program, this young person can say I can go to college and make money while I’m going to college, or I can start a business, or I can go work for an employer,” said Charles Ashley III, Founder and CEO of Cultivating Coders.

The two organizations say they will soon start visiting high schools and going to each other’s programs to talk about what they offer.

Albuquerque Community Foundation is now stepping up to offer scholarship support for students who want to attend Deep Dive Coding after graduating from Cultivating Coders.
