Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, or Drones)

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones, are a growing sector of New Mexico’s economy in a staggering range of industries, including construction and design, real estate, public safety, film and television, mapping and GIS, agricultural monitoring, meteorology, disaster management, telecommunications, oil and gas exploration, and myriad others. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International estimates that by 2025, UAS will create over 100,000 jobs and have an economic impact of $82 billion nationwide; including 765 jobs and a $606 million economic impact in New Mexico.

CNM Ingenuity’s accelerated online UAS courses will get you started on the path toward a career in this emerging industry. Our instructors will introduce the fundamentals of UAS safety and regulation, and emphasize the use of UAS for high-precision measurement and mapping and other applications including construction management, surveying, and marketing. They will also prepare you to take the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 107 Exam and become a registered UAS pilot.

Introduction to Unmanned Aircraft Systems teaches the basics of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). From the fundamentals of flight to airframes, applications, and UAS operations and safety, the course shows how UAS/drones are meeting needs and creating opportunities in surveying and mapping, urban planning, construction management, public safety, real estate, criminal justice, archaeology, and countless other professions. The course will focus on the basics of UAS providing you the information you need to know as you integrate this technology into your research, job, or business.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standards, Regulations, Law, and Exam Prep introduces the regulatory and legal context for UAS operation in the national airspace. It also prepares you for the FAA Part 107 Exam to become a registered UAS Pilot. This course does not include the FAA Exam, but it will provide an introduction to all of the subject areas required for the exam. The subjects included on the Part 107 Exam are specific to aviation and include many concepts and acronyms with which the average person is unlikely to be familiar. Completion of this course does not guarantee that you will pass the FAA Exam.

Fee Assistance

You may qualify to take the Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS or Drones) series at no charge if your employer meets these criteria:

  • Incorporated as a for-profit or not-for-profit entity in NM
  • Headquartered within the Albuquerque city limits
  • A business with less than 500 employees
  • Business has been located in Albuquerque for 1 year OR Business owner has been an Albuquerque resident for at least 1 year at any time prior to the time of training

Job Training Albuquerque (JTA) is a workforce development program that provides opportunities for the local workforce to gain necessary skills in order to fill skill gaps and meet the workforce needs of existing and potential employers.
