In April 2016, the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions (NMDWS) contracted with Ingenuity Software Labs (ISL) to develop an Internship Portal. The goal was to create a web application to promote and encourage job seekers to consider internships as a pathway to a new career, allowing them to search and apply for internships, and they will receive recommendations for internship opportunities that relate to their skills and experience. The portal also educates employers about the value of hiring interns, and employers are able to post internships and search for interns. The portal was be integrated with the current NM Workforce online jobs system and serves as a premium site for internships and job shadowing programs for the State of New Mexico.
The concept of internships was been incorporated into this project, with five graduates of the Deep Dive Coding Bootcamp and one CNM BIT graduate serving as paid interns. These graduates received valuable mentorship and training from senior developers who contracted with ISL and from the NMDWS IT staff. By receiving this real-world training and mentorship, several of these interns succeeded in finding a fulltime job. The Internship Portal, now titled Internships|Students Work, was be promoted by CNM in partnership with NMDWS. It was an important initiative to Governor Martinez, and it launched in October 2016.
